"Our success at Tesco Bank will largely depend on the quality of the people that we recruit and then how we best develop them. Our role is to ensure that we deliver learning and development opportunities that will bring to life the Tesco Values and Culture and support the capability and growth of our leaders at all levels of the business. We will ensure that from onboarding, through induction and onto in the job development, we will use the latest learning techniques and channels to ensure you get the most effective learning experience."
Dave Buglass, Head of Learning and Development, Tesco Bank
We know that our people are what differentiate us from other companies and we invest in their future every day.
Their greatest opportunity to get on is owning their own development and seizing every chance to grow in knowledge, confidence and contribution. Across Tesco, at any one time we have 7,000 members of staff on development programmes specifically designed to help them gain the experience and skills they need to move on to the next Tesco challenge. There’s no fear getting stuck in a rut with us - each year, some 10,000 of our staff prove that by changing jobs within the company.
As part of our goal to make Tesco Bank a Great Place to Work, we have to recognise what our people want from working here. This is underpinned by our four People Promises, one of which is an ‘Opportunity To Get On’. At Tesco Bank we actively promote internally, we reward our people based on their contribution, we encourage growth and provide opportunities for development, and we recognise behaviours as well as results.
"I really enjoyed the induction course. I think it helped that I attended this on my first two days in the organisation, it gave me a really good idea of the culture that Tesco Bank are trying to achieve and how I can contribute/fit into that as an employee. As a result I felt really inspired and enthusiastic about the opportunity that is available to me here."
Mhairi Chalk, IT & Procurement
When it comes to development, we treat our people the same way we treat our customers - as individuals with their own specific needs. Options is our way of helping our people move on at Tesco and is part of our commitment to ‘an opportunity to get on’. Options is a development solution for individuals identified through our talent planning process as having the potential and desire to move to the next work level within 0-12 months. It is an accelerated and flexible programme that is tailored to the development needs of the individual. The aim of Options is to support learning and individual development for a smoother transition between work levels. It will help develop a combination of leadership, general and operating skills through 'on and off' the job experiences.
For managers in Head Office we have a 'store experience' programme called TWIST (Tesco Week In Store Together). It involves spending five days in a store learning by doing, once a year, every year. TWIST reinforces our values and aims to improve knowledge sharing and help the office, stores and distribution work better for our customers. It covers all aspects of store operations, from the back door to the shop floor working as a Customer Assistant.
