Simon Fowler

TRU Team Manager, Newcastle

Simon FowlerWhen did you join Tesco Bank?
1st June 2010.

How did you find the application process?
Very good. I attended a big Jobs Fair at St James Park - it was even on BBC News !. Then I had a day’s interview at a hotel. I was kept in the loop all the way, even though I wasn’t due to start for a few months. I even got an Easter Card. I was actually brought in a month early, as I was meant to start in July.

Where were you before Tesco Bank?
I’ve worked for a few insurance companies, laterly as an Account Executive for Oyster Risk Solutions, a commercial insurance broker.

What made you change jobs?
It was the prospect of working for Tesco Bank; a new start-up business sounded like a real challenge. I’ve helped in the development of the TRU team, which is really rewarding. We’re making a big impact on the shape and form of Tesco Bank. It’s also really nice to come into a brand new contact centre with loads of facilities.

What is the biggest difference you’ve found?
The whole attitude and the way it’s managed. It’s a friendly, relaxed environment but hard-working - I’ve never been in one like it. Tesco Bank have clearly brought in like-minded people through the recruitment process.

How do you find customers react to Tesco Bank?
Very good. Our relaxed, friendly environment is reflected on our phone calls. We provide a service selling products that people actually need.

How is your trip to work and back?
I live 15 miles away. I take the car. I don’t mind the drive as I’m going to a job I enjoy. I’ve previously lived closer to my old companies, however, it felt like a longer drive as it felt more of a chore - I can’t stress how much I enjoy my day, so the journey is very worthwhile.

What is your team like?
Very friendly and relaxed. It’s a great team.

Any social activities?
5-aside Football. We have a pitch on site and have entered a league on a Tuesday night. We’ve been so busy, so we have a night planned out as a team, when hopefully we’ll have more time to relax and have a good night out.

How did you find the training?
I thought that it was really good. As one of the first Team Leaders, I wrote a lot of the training materials, and helped oversee the induction work myself.

How do you see your career developing at Tesco Bank?
Really well – there are so many opportunities for the future. We need a lot more staff and in 2 years it will be a very different business. I know the next logical step up in the business and my Operations Manager is supporting me all the way.

How would you describe your day to a friend?
Busy, challenging, and very rewarding. Things can change in our department by the hour, never mind the day, so I have to be flexible and alert at all times.

What do you do in your spare time?
I’m married with 2 children, a boy aged 9 and a girl aged 6, so there’s lots to do. When I get the time I enjoy football – I’m a big Newcastle fan.
