When did you join Tesco Bank?
December 2009.
How did you find the application process?
Very straight forward. I had a thorough competency based interview, then was offered the job. It was very quick and professional.
Where were you before Tesco Bank?
With Lloyds Banking Group in London.
What made you change jobs?
There were 3 key attractions – first was the scope of the job. My passion is digital technology enhancing the customers’ experience. The second was the organisation – the corporate culture here fits well with my own beliefs. Lastly it is the people I work with – I already knew quite a few people from other organisations. It’s a smaller financial services industry in Scotland and lots of people know each other.
What is the biggest difference you’ve found?
The fact that it’s a start-up company, and a brand new bank platform.
How do you find customers react to Tesco Bank?
Tesco customers are very loyal and keen to interact with us. They look at it as part of Tesco. Our task is to give the others the same fantastic service and help them to become Tesco Bank customers.
How is your trip to work and back?
It’s very easy - I’m only 10 mins by train from Glasgow and under an hour if I’m working in Edinburgh.
What is your team like?
It’s a great team. Another key attraction for me was that I was the first person in my team and I got to hand-pick/recruit every single member of my team. I see it as my ‘A’ Team !
Any social activities?
Tesco are very focused on supporting the community so we run a lot of fundraising events, like a night at the races or abseiling off the Falkirk Wheel!
How did you find the training?
It was on-the-job training and I helped design some of it myself. The training support here is first class.
How do you see your career developing at Tesco Bank?
I’d love to broaden my experience by working internationally within the wider Tesco Group. In the short-medium future, Tesco Bank’s focus is on the UK market, but in the longer term there will be international opportunities.
How would you describe your day to a friend?
Very varied and busy. I can jump from Operations board meetings to interviewing to retail design of customer experience – like the screen layout for internet banking - to liaising with third party suppliers.
Your interviewer will be trained in assessment and will be fair and consistent.
